Subject: Exhibition on Sustainable Architecture to mark 20th Anniversary of the ACE

Dear Colleagues,

You will be aware that 2010 marks the 20th year since the founding of the ACE.  You are also aware that plans are in place to prepare a Special General Assembly on the 3rd December 2010 to mark this occasion.

As part of the Events that will mark this 20th Anniversary the Executive Board plans to organise an Exhibition of the best examples of sustainable architecture for all countries in Europe.  The idea is to prepare an Exhibition that will be held in the premises of the European Parliament for the week before the General Assembly (from Monday 29th November to Friday 3rd December) and then it will transfer for a short period to the Bozar Cultural Centre in the heart of Brussels.  In addition to displaying the best examples of sustainable architecture currently constructed in the Member countries of the ACE this exhibition will also highlight the main achievements of the ACE over its 20-year life.

The main purpose of this letter is to invite you to send to the Secretariat of the ACE examples from your country of the best sustainable architecture projects that have been constructed.  It is important in this case that the buildings are completed and occupied and that they are considered to be outstanding examples of sustainable approaches to architectural design.

The format in which the submissions should be made are pictures in jpg format to a high resolution and text in a word document format (doc).

In making your selection of projects it could be that there are the projects that won national Awards for sustainable architecture in recent years or they might be the result of a call that you now make to practices.

Once the ACE Secretariat receives the information it will hope to compile approximately 33 panels displaying one building from each country from which a Member Organisation comes.  In this way the exhibition will give a broad overview of different successful examples of sustainable architecture across the European Union.

Should more than 33 projects be submitted then it is the intention of the Executive Board to form a small selection Committee chaired by an external architect in order to choose which of the submitted projects will be exhibited in the European Parliament.  In making that choice specific criteria that are still in preparation will be applied and those criteria will include elements such as the need to have a good cross section of different building types, the need to have demonstration of all applicable technologies within sustainable architecture and high aesthetic qualities displaying the qualities of the European Union.

For your additional information it is intended that the design of the panels and the layout will be the subject of a project for the First year Masters Students at the Catholic University of Louvain-La-Neuve a project that will be managed by Adrian Joyce, Jos Leyssens, Michel Procand Benoit Toussaint, Graphic Designer.  In this way the ACE expects to mount a high quality exhibition at a relatively low cost. Without this Agreement of the Catholic University of Louvain-La-Neuve the ACE simply has not the resources within its Brussels office to prepare such an exhibition.

Given that the University project must be fully in place before the 15th of September and taking account of the summer holiday period it is imperative that you submit your proposed project to the Secretariat of the ACE on or before Friday 9th July 2010.

Thanking you in advance for your collaboration.

Yours sincerely,

Adrian Joyce
